Force closes & text message says I have a message unread even after reading it.
Google Voice App Reviews
Issues
Abysmally slow!
Unbelievable that a company like Google would allow this quality actually be released! Is there ANY testing that happens before it is released? And if there is testing, clearly they didnt test any KPIs!!!! This sluggishness is ridiculous and unacceptable!
Poor UI
Pathetic UI. Hard to imagine its a google product.
Works great on my iPhone 6
Not real sure what all the negative reviews or four. This app works great on my phone what do you want for free anyway? Stop badgering the developer theyre doing fine. Thank you google!
Still not fully functional with Googles own Gboard
Another update, another failure to make compatible with insertion of Gboard GIFS or pics. After you open a text message, Google Voice will leave it marked unread, requiring you to reopen it to switch its status to read. Other commenters point this out. It took months for an update but no noticeable improvement. Still wont paste GIFs or pics from Gboard into a text. That was my issue, which I and others reported numerous times in the app feedback. Youd think a Google products compatibility with its own keyboard would be a priority, but it isnt. Dev team is AWOL. Still wont copy and paste GIFs. Google Hangouts interfaces horribly with Contacts, but can work with Gboard and paste pics and GIFS, which Google Voice cant. Google Voice can interface terrifically with Contacts, but has the shortcomings listed below. The Valentines Day 2017 update fixed no noticeable problems since the major overhaul of Jan 2017. Fail. Google Voices inability to paste GIFS, and Google Hangouts superior integration with Gmail, led me to switch back to Google Hangouts. Hoping Google Voice will become fully functional.
Goodbye Voicemails
Very buggy app. My voicemails are shown but cannot be played. I cannot mark anything as unread or use stars like we used to. Design is better, but functionality is far worse. Please fix ASAP Google! Received confirmation that Click-to-Call has been removed. Another App killed by Google! ☠️
Works perfectly with hangouts
The June 2017 version can send and receive voice and SMS. With Hangouts, I can now see the name of the people from my contact list when they call. Also GV now warn that it will first call Google before routing to the intended recipient. I previously had to forward GV call to my regular line, but not anymore.

Several usability issues
I use Google Voice as a secondary IM number that follows me whatever country I am him. Its been great to have that feature. However, I would expect this app to be able to place a VOIP call directly like the Hangouts app does, but it can only do that by calling your phone number or by causing your phone number to call. Sometimes I just need or want to place a call over Wi-Fi but I cant without switching apps. Another annoyance is that messages that Ive read still show up as unread until the second time that I open it.
Just aweful. Wish Id kept the 2013 version.
Painfully slow every time it starts. Totally unresponsive at times. Its almost feeling like Google deliberately created the worst possible iOS experience in order to convince people to move to Android.
Amazing app
The app works great, I love it. Though it crashes at times. I would love to change chat colours to my choice
Irritating bugs that go unfixed for years
- messages remain marked as unread even after viewing them 2, 3, 4 times - my own sent messages get marked as unread - messages that come in when app is not open can be partially read via notification, but if network connection is poor those messages are nowhere to be found in the app - app UI is unresponsive while network calls are being performed, and the app seems to perform network calls for everything you do in the app
Worse after last update
It takes a long time to refresh and see the last message received. The new message icon has a delayed refresh. Sent messages appear as unread. Have to scroll under text entry box to see last message. No need for confirmation after I use mark all read. 4 clicks to make a call. The call log refreshes in seconds after hitting its tab so very likely you will tap a wrong entry unless you wait. Favorite contacts disappeared. MMS addition is only positive for this years updates.
Login issues
Latest version doesnt address this issue. Fix it. ALL Google products have logon issues. Apps tell me cookies are disabled, which isnt true. I can use gmail and voice in browser but not apps. Restart of phone doesnt help. Very frustrating that I cant use ANY Google products on my phone now. Fix it.
Sloooooow
Is this app painfully slow for anyone else? On iPhone 6S app takes too long to update, refresh and move across the UI.
Attaching a pic
I love google voice but when I try to attach a pic in a text it just keeps loading but wont open my camera roll; Im not sure why because I gave access to my camera and roll.
Stupid
Possibly the world’s stupidest app. Yes you can delete messages, but good luck figuring out how. And amazingly Google has figured out how to make you spend more time deleting a call than it took to leave it. For example, a 1 second call takes 10 seconds to delete. The result is that you end up with years and years of junk.
Click2call still missing…
Would be a 5-star app if Click2call functionality was restored.
horrendous user interface
no way to favorite contacts. each phone number for a contact gets listed separately as its own contact. makes no sense.
New ver getting better
Update 3: Be smarter by auto-filling recent recipients when typing in that field (rather than always showing same alpha-ordered matches). Clicking + should take directly to current tabbed function (rather than popping up to pick Message vs Call). After sending a Message, actually show what the user sent (rather than hiding it behind Type a message). Bring back Quick Dial. Update 2: Keeping three stars as bottom "tab" area has subtle notification for e.g. new voicemails. Needs more pronounced look, similar to iOS badge app icons. Update: Three stars now. Like group messages and MMS Google finally added. Still need to fix read/unread status as reading and sometimes even replying to a text often keeps it unread, requiring another "read" to reflect correct status. Original: Like the UI updates. BUT now I have to "archive" ALL messages that were *previously archived* to clear out what used to be the Inbox?? Glad I only updated on test device so normal phone can still have old version that still knows what "Inbox" means.
